President Obama went to Ottawa recently to meet with the leaders of Canada and Mexico. So far, so good; that’s part of his job description. Ordinarily I wouldn’t bat an eyelash.
But while there he took the opportunity to go on a self-described “rant” in front of the press, the substance of which was universally understood to be anti-Trump, and in the course of this rant said some pretty remarkable things.
What struck me the most was his assertion that “somebody who . . . engages in rhetoric about how we’re going to look after ourselves and take it to the other guy” must be a bad, bad man. Probably a Racist, or something.
What’s the message, Mr. President? That the American people should not care for their own interests? That we should let anyone and everyone walk all over us? That it is evil for an old White Republican male candidate to actually care about the American public, and talk to the nation about how “we’re going to look after ourselves?” Look after ourselves — the horror! So what’s the message, eh, Mr. President? ‘Shut up, Whitey scum; lie down and die painfully?” Is that it?
This joker took an oath to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States,” and — inconveniently — that document, up at the very front, has some language about how the purpose of the Federal government is to “promote the general Welfare and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity.” Do you hear that, Mr. President? “Ourselves and our posterity.” Even the dusty, forgotten, highly-irrelevant founding document of our republic, which you took an oath to uphold, apparently agrees with Donald Trump in that we should “look after ourselves” first and foremost. Not look after 11 million foreigners who weren’t polite enough to knock before simply barging into our country (or overstaying their welcome). Not look after 35 million Canadians who have their own government to look after them, nor 122 million Mexicans who have their own government too. Nor all the billions in China, India or Africa, or the 500 million in the (potentially rapidly disintegrating) EU.
None of which is to say we shouldn’t get along with our neighbors, or strike mutually-beneficial military, trade, immigration, environmental and lord-knows-what-else deals. All of which is to say, however, that it’s the President’s job to put the interests of America first when doing these deals; yes, Mr. Obama, I mean that terrible, horrible, no good, very bad notion of “looking after ourselves.”
This guy hates us. He really, really hates us. I can’t believe I previously voted for that snake in the grass.
